The American Medical Association Advocates for AAGL and Its Members
Physicians from across the United States gathered in Chicago for the 2025 American Medical Association (AMA) Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates. I am pleased to share my report with AAGL members worldwide. The AMA has a long history of advancing medical art and science, promoting public health, and advocating for the rights and interests of both physicians and patients. I am proud to serve as the lead delegate for our Society. AAGL at the AMA provides a strong and respected voice, advocating for all our members.
AAGL’s national exposure and advocacy at the AMA greatly benefits our Society and its members. We work closely with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Your AAGL delegation includes two delegates and one alternate delegate; Dr. Sheena Galhotra and I serve as your delegates. Dr. Galhotra is from Creighton University Medical School – Phoenix Campus. Dr. Asha McClurg from the University of North Carolina serves as your alternate delegate.
Over the past nine years, your delegation has championed policies on several issues vital to our AAGL members. The June 2025 Annual AMA meeting was no exception. Together we:
- Strengthened AMA policy to ensure AI tools in medicine are validated and safe for use in patient care.
- Advocated for transparency and oversight in AI and large language models, emphasizing the need for clinical evidence and physician confidence in these new technologies.
- Reaffirmed its commitment to reform Medicare and Medicaid payments, emphasizing the negative effects of stagnant reimbursement.
- Sat in solidarity with our ACOG colleagues to ensure that all AMA meetings are held in safe locations.
- Supported the physical and psychological safety of board examination candidates during certification examinations.
- Addressed challenges facing private practice
- Advocated continuing the AMA’s task force to preserve the patient-physician relationship.
- Opposed the detrimental changes to the NIH.
- Vigorously defeated over 50 state bills that attempted to expand the role of nonphysician practitioners.
Dr. Sheena Galhotra sponsored Resolution 703: asking the AMA to support policies that ensure data collected from surgical practices are used primarily to improve surgical education, quality, and patient safety, with proper safeguards to prevent misuse. Her resolution received overwhelming support from the AMA House of Delegates.
As your delegates, Drs. Galhotra, McClurg, and I diligently work to enhance AAGL’s visibility across the country and to support our society’s members and patients. We are honored to represent our organization and grateful for your support.
