JMIG Associate Editor Experience

The Associate Editor program was launched in 2024 and has been a resounding success. The Associate Editor is designed for physicians aspiring for exposure to all aspects of our Journal Editorial team and process. By the end of their term, the JMIG Associate Editor will have the skills and experience to lay the foundation for future leadership roles in academics and a medical journal.
We, the 2025 Associate Editors are pleased to share our experiences as JMIG Associate Editors over the past year and encourage you to apply for 2026!
Why did you apply for the Associate Editor position?
All of us have been reviewers for JMIG before applying for the Associate Editor position. We view JMIG as the leading scientific platform in minimally invasive gynecology and reviewing for the journal allowed us to stay updated on MIGS research and surgical techniques, which in turn inspired our own research interests. We were therefore keen to get more involved in the pre-publication decision-making process which shapes research in our field.
What types of projects have you participated in?
We have all attended the Editorial Board meetings and continued to review articles for JMIG. We each also had personal projects. Dr. Orlando interviewed reviewers for the JMIG Review Spotlights. Dr. Misal was involved in thematically organizing accepted articles for each printed issue thematically to provide a curated experience for the reader. Dr. Dior participated in reviewing all images submitted to the journal.
What have been highlights of the position?
We all agree that the best part of the position has been the opportunity to meet with the Deputy Editors and Co-Editors in Chief to understand the components of Journal publication and their perspectives when evaluating manuscript quality and integrity. This experience has fundamentally shaped the ways we read and evaluate research studies and added a deeper understanding of the editorial process.
What advice do you have for future Associate Editors?
Dr. Dior: My advice is to really enjoy the experience—it’s a great chance to see the inner workings of high-quality academic publishing. Use the opportunity to connect with colleagues on the editorial team and learn from their perspectives—you’ll find those conversations extremely valuable.
Dr. Misal: I would recommend diving into the inner workings of the journal, and learn everything about the behind the scenes infrastructure, like how special issues are planned, author disputes are handled, or how reviewers are assessed. Talk to everyone and volunteer for every opportunity that piques your interest!
Dr. Orlando: My advice for new Associate Editors is to make the most of the year in this position because it goes very quickly! Try to use this opportunity to shape your perspectives on research and medical publishing and see if this is an ongoing area of interest in your career. Take the opportunities for one-on-one conversations with people involved in all levels of JMIG, including the publishing and research teams.
We hope that future Associate Editors will enjoy their time with the Journal as much as we have.
Submit your application today! Applications close December 1, 2025.
