From Paper to Pixels: Growing JMIG’s Digital Footprint

Since establishing its social media presence and introducing the Social Media Editor role in 2016, the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology (JMIG) has aimed to translate evidence-based medicine into accessible, engaging, and real-time content. This vision to expand the Journal’s digital footprint has become increasingly vital—particularly during JMIG’s transition to a digital-only format. The team has since expanded to 13 members with the launch of the JMIG Social Media Scholars program.
The JMIG Social Media Scholars Program is a hallmark initiative that sets JMIG apart from other journals. It provides early-career engagement in the journal and mentorship for Residents, Fellows, and junior faculty via a structured program to contribute to the editorial process and academic publishing, grow professionally, and gain hands-on experience in academic social media. Over the course of two years, scholars contribute to ongoing initiatives or take the lead in developing their own scholarly social media projects. They also participate in content development and platform strategy across various social media platforms.
Over the years, the social media team has launched a range of initiatives, many developed by the social media scholars, including the Twitter Journal Club, visual abstracts, Author Spotlights, Take-Home Tuesdays, Foto Fridays, and Podcasts. One exciting expansion of our initiatives are the visual abstracts, in which authors will now be able to submit graphical summaries of their work to increase accessibility and reach at time of manuscript submission. These are shared across our platforms and help boost the visibility of key findings. We’ve also transitioned our JMIG Journal Club from X (formerly Twitter) to Instagram, making it easier for our global community to participate in thoughtful, accessible discussions.
We’re also proud to introduce Sim Sundays, a recurring feature across JMIG’s social media platforms that highlights innovation in simulation and education within MIGS. This initiative will complement JMIG’s new article type dedicated to simulation and education, inviting authors to submit projects for peer-review along with practical toolkits to share with the broader MIGS community. So please look out for this exciting development—and we encourage you to submit your work for consideration.
As a continuation of JMIG’s expanding digital initiatives and to support the program’s strategic growth, we are thrilled to announce Dr. Kristina Karlson as our inaugural Associate Editor for Social Media—a newly established two-year leadership role working alongside the Deputy Editor for Social Media. Dr. Karlson brings creativity, experience, and vision to this role, and will be instrumental in mentoring Scholars, leading content strategy, and helping shape the future of JMIG’s digital engagement.
Interested in becoming a JMIG Social Media Scholar? Applications open June 1, 2025, for the 2025-2027 cohort, deadline August 31, 2025. We encourage early-career professionals passionate about MIGS and digital communication to apply.
As JMIG continues to grow its digital community, we invite you to follow us, share our content, and join us in reimagining how we connect, educate, and lead in minimally invasive gynecology.
