Advancing Excellence: AAGL Practice Committee Leads the Way

At a time when the field of Complex Benign Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery is ever-evolving, the need for trusted, evidence-based guidance has never been clearer. Since its revitalization in July 2021, the AAGL Practice Guideline Committee has risen to this challenge with inspiring dedication, producing rigorous, impactful publications that directly support our members in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
Our committee’s mission is rooted in evidence. Each guideline begins with the deliberate identification of the most pressing clinical questions, then moves through a methodical process guided by the highest standards—following PRISMA guidelines, systematic literature reviews, risk of bias assessments, and robust meta-analyses. Already, this collaborative spirit has yielded remarkable contributions. Notable recent publications include:
- Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Endometriosis Research (Feb 2024; JMIG 31(2):71-83), offering a structured review and recommendation of the most relevant tools used in randomized controlled trials, helping ensure that patient voices remain central in research.
- Radiofrequency Ablation for Uterine Fibroids (Jan 2025; JMIG 32(1):74-91), a comprehensive systematic review that clarifies the role of this evolving treatment in practice.
- Minimizing Blood Loss During Laparoscopic Myomectomy (Feb 2025; 32(2):113-132), delivering evidence-based recommendations to enhance surgical safety and outcomes for patients undergoing myomectomy.
Several impactful projects are currently underway. Our teams are addressing key topics that include:
- Hysteroscopy for abnormal uterine bleeding: In collaboration with international partners, this team is analyzing the diagnostic accuracy of hysteroscopy to refine our approach to endometrial pathologies.
- Ergonomics in laparoscopic surgery: Recognizing the physical demands on surgeons, this project is investigating interventions to optimize surgeon well-being and performance in the OR.
- Surgical treatment of uterine niche: This timely investigation explores whether surgical correction improves fertility outcomes for patients hoping to conceive—a question with profound implications for clinical counseling and treatment planning.
Our progress is measured not only in publications but in the thriving spirit of collaboration that fuels every milestone. These projects reflect countless hours of meetings, literature reviews, data extraction, and thoughtful debate—testament to the unwavering commitment of our global teams.
To all investigators and contributors—your expertise, perseverance, and passion make this progress possible. Thank you for your tireless dedication to our specialty and for strengthening the evidence that empowers surgeons and improves patient care worldwide.
