Mesh-augmentation for prolapse and incontinence procedures gained popularity in the 1990’s and has continued to be a mainstay of treatment for these conditions. When used properly, these materials can be associated with high rates of symptom resolution and patient satisfaction. While uncommon, mesh complications can arise and be associated with significant negative sequelae. The goal of this lecture is to provide gynecologic surgeons with a greater understanding of mesh properties used for these procedures, the clinical applications for mesh, and the contraindications for its use. Additionally, even if these procedures are not a part of one’s clinical practice, caring for patients with a history of mesh will be. As such, considerations for diagnosing and managing prolapse and incontinence mesh complications will be highlighted with case-based discussions.
