2021 Honorary Chair: Dr. Thomas L. Lyons
The prestigious position of AAGL Honorary Chair recognizes Dr. Thomas Lyons for his service to the AAGL and the exemplary contributions that he has made in the field of MIGS.
Dr. Lyons graduated with an MS in Clinical and Biopsychology from the University of Georgia. He then earned his medical degree and completed his internship and residency at the University of Colorado. An All-American college athlete, Dr. Lyons went on to finance his medical education by playing football for the Denver Broncos.
Dr. Lyons worked in private practice in Georgia until 2017. He also served as Medical Director of the Center for Women’s Care and Reproductive Surgery, Clinical Associate Professor at the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership and as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He currently attends at Mercy Multi-Specialty Medical Clinic in Athens, Georgia and is involved in teaching medical students and residents in primary care in women’s healthcare. Dr. Lyons has been a program director of an AAGL fellowship since the inception of the FMIGS program. Eleven fellows have trained and graduated under his mentorship, including his first fellow, AAGL President, Dr. Ted Lee. Dr. Lyons remains dedicated to the development and teaching of minimally invasive, patient-friendly procedures to physicians worldwide.
Dr. Lyons has been a participant in many academic and clinical studies, authored more than 100 scholarly publications, has participated in medical outreach opportunities to train surgeons in Mexico, and developed instrumentation that is in current use worldwide.
As an active member of the AAGL since 1981, Dr. Lyons has served in numerous leadership roles. In addition to his many years as an FMIGS Program Director, Dr. Lyons served on the AAGL Board of Directors (1995-1997) and is currently an active member on the AAGL Advisory Committee and the Foundation of the AAGL Board of Directors.
With his extensive experience, service to the AAGL and contributions to elevating gynecologic surgery, Dr. Lyons is well deserving of this esteemed recognition. Please join us in congratulating our 2021 AAGL Honorary Chair, Dr. Thomas S. Lyons!
