Social Media Journey: JMIG’s Digital Direction

It’s a new year with a new set of scholars, as well as some leadership changes in JMIG’s Social Media team. Dr. Mireille Truong, the outgoing JMIG Deputy Editor of Social Media, founded the social media team in 2016 and is now, after 10 years, passing the baton. It is taken up by Dr. Kristina Karlson, new JMIG Deputy Editor of Social Media, who has served on the Social Media Scholars team since 2023 and was the inaugural Associate Editor in 2025. Dr. Stephanie Kass has served on the Journal’s Social Media team since 2023 and has now stepped into the Associate Editor role.
Dr. Truong has led numerous scholars over the years through the ins and outs of academic social media work – with nearly 600 posts in the last decade on Instagram alone. The team has utilized other platforms including Facebook, X (Twitter), and numerous podcast streaming services with baseline follower counts as low as 119 to now over 7.3K followers. Presently, the team centers Instagram and Facebook as their main avenue for posting due to increased engagement over the last year in the academic gynecologic space. Various scholars over the years have brought innovation, creativity, and direction to the face of JMIG’s social media – leading projects and fine-tuning delivery of cutting-edge academics from the Journal with initiatives such as podcasts, photo features, journal clubs, take home conclusions, simulation and video features, and imaginative visual interpretation of articles.
As the fellowship has rebranded to Complex Benign Gynecology (CBG), the social media team is now refocusing on ensuring data driven dissemination of the Journal’s work in the growing field through increased engagement based on the landscape of social media today and the community we serve – you!
The team’s vision remains the same: Be a voice for JMIG and the CBG (previously MIGS) community through innovative social media avenues to disseminate evidence-based medicine as it pertains to complex benign gynecology.
Our podcast has been renamed from “MIGS Front Page” to “JMIG Front Page,” and we are excited to announce our joining of AAGL’s podcast platform which includes MIGS on the Mic by the Young Alumni Network (YAN), as well as episodes from SurgeryU and the AI Taskforce. Joining the team allows for better integration of the work our colleagues are doing to provide our listeners with the best experience and access to more material. Our podcast focuses on engaging authors in discussion of their work from the design of complex clinical trials to the latest in clinical guidance for complex benign gynecologists in recent issues. Later this year at AAGL, we will host groundbreaking surgeons in discussion of new techniques and practices to feature in 2027.
With the new editorial leadership team, we have started an “Editor’s Corner” on a bimonthly basis, in which we feature the details of the Journal’s academic opportunities: how to publish, article types, reviewing papers, and more. We aim to demystify academic practices within the scope of the Journal and provide structured education, particularly for those new to academic publishing such as residents and fellows who are a large portion of our follower base. For those with more experience, we get into more of the details such as policies and procedures unique to the Journal.
As we look ahead, our focus is on leveraging engagement data and direct feedback to better understand and serve our audience. By closely tracking what resonates- whether through post performance, podcast listenership, or real-time interaction – we aim to refine and streamline how we deliver content. This means prioritizing high-yield educational formats, optimizing timing and platforms, and creating more responsive, community-driven material. Ultimately, our goal is to not only share information, but to listen, adapt, and evolve alongside the complex benign gynecology community we represent.
