EMIGS Continues Its Strong Momentum
AAGL’s EMIGS program continues its unprecedented roll-out and is positioned to lead the future of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS). American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Program Directors are eager to participate in EMIGS with over 50% of CREOG sites indicating they plan to incorporate EMIGS into their programs during the first few months of the roll-out.
CREOG sites that have indicated intent will be receiving an email soon to verify and confirm participation. As a generous donation from the AAGL and a token of commitment to advancing gynecologic care and surgical education, the LaparoBowl kits will be going out during the month of October 2022. The kits include one LaparoBowl, two trocars, tech items required for the virtual proctoring of the test, and a large set of consumables for practice. Additional LaparoBowls and consumables will be available for purchase. Registration and testing will begin in January 2023 giving residents time to practice the five laparoscopic skills within the innovative LaparoBowl platform. The exam fee of $525 will cover access to the online EMIGS Didactics, the Cognitive and Manual Skills tests, and all related expenses such as test kits, shipping, virtual proctoring, and exam grading and reporting.
The goal of EMIGS is to provide residents, fellows, and practicing physicians an opportunity to learn the essentials of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery using structured, standardized, and validated methods, and to test their basic knowledge and manual skills, with the ultimate goal of elevating gynecologic surgical training and improving the quality of patient care.
EMIGS is made possible by new initiatives to improve standardization and simulation from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). After rigorous development and validation efforts over the past nine years, EMIGS was approved by ABOG in May 2022 to meet the standard for board eligibility.
The EMIGS program will also be featured at AAGL’s Global Congress in December. Stop by the AAGL booth in the Exhibit Hall to experience a hands-on “EMIGS Experience.” Trainers and LaparoBowls will be available to try out, and our expert faculty will be on hand to answer any questions. Don’t miss the opportunity to be one of the first to experience this groundbreaking MIGS development.
After many years of development, EMIGS is truly one of AAGL’s crowning achievements. We give our sincere thanks to the EMIGS Steering Committee, the nine AAGL Boards who held the vision, and the AAGL staff who worked hard behind the scenes. Finally, the efforts and the thousands of volunteer hours by this dedicated team are coming to fruition, and it is truly time to celebrate. Visit the AAGL website for more information.
